Gorica and Nova Gorica are not a single city, even though residents of Nova Gorica often refer to themselves simply as Goričani, call their city Gorica, and refer to the Italian one as old Gorica. Never—not once—has the border between the two cities been imaginary. Like all borders in the world, this one restricts people’s freedom and divides them. Quite simply, it has a negative effect on the lives of the people around it—whether they are on one side or the other. But this exhibition speaks of something else. The photographs of six families tell the stories of men and women from both cities, who quietly undermine the strength of the border and erode its divisive power, originally conceived in another era. They do this for economic reasons, sometimes cultural, and perhaps least often emotional. They persistently reshape the meaning of the border, correct history, and refuse to let it dominate. The positive interweaving of Gorica and Nova Gorica, as seen through the perspectives of the portrayed individuals, does not, in any way, legitimize this border—or any border in the world. Meta Krese
