The quarry started thriving – perhaps a little too much – before the Second World War, when soldiers assisted by locals used dynamite to blow up rocks which they later crushed and processed into material used to build bunkers, which were a component part of the Rupnik Line. During the Second World War, they used larger dressed blocks to fortify parts of the road all along the valley of Poljanska dolina. This rather inglorious period in the life of Hotavlje stone ended on 18 October 1948, when a different type of creative history started evolving in Hotavlje. Its beginnings, however, were sometimes slow and rather sticky.
